How can ship wiring cope with salt-spray corrosion?

Ships, offshore equipment and coastal facilities are exposed to high salt-fog environments for long periods. Salt accelerates metal corrosion and plastic aging, affecting the reliability and service life of cable fixing systems.

Therefore, for marine wiring it is recommended to choose cable management products suited to the actual environment. For example, in humid, high salt-fog environments, PA612 cable ties with lower water absorption and better chemical resistance can be used; for long-term contact with seawater or highly corrosive areas, stainless steel cable ties can be used to improve corrosion resistance and fixing stability.
In addition, whether a product holds the relevant international certifications and long-term environmental durability is also an important factor when selecting products for marine wiring.

Why Must Moisture Absorption of Cable Ties Be Considered in Marine Wiring?

Marine environments are exposed to high humidity for long periods. When materials absorb moisture, they may change in size, lose strength or lose holding force, which in turn affects how well cables are secured.

In general, materials with a lower moisture absorption rate offer better dimensional stability and environmental adaptability, reducing the risk of performance changes caused by moisture. Therefore, in high-humidity settings such as ship wiring, marine equipment and outdoor control systems, engineering plastics with low moisture absorption, such as PA612 cable ties, are often preferred to maintain stable, long-term fastening.
Choosing the right material helps improve equipment reliability, lower maintenance costs and extend the service life of cable management systems.

Why does the moisture absorption rate of cable ties affect their service life?
Polyamide (Nylon) is hygroscopic. Once it absorbs moisture, it may swell dimensionally, lose rigidity, change in tensile strength and lose some of its holding capability. In long-term use in high-humidity or salt-spray environments, material stability directly affects how reliably the cable bundle is secured, so moisture absorption rate is one of the key factors when choosing industrial-grade cable ties.
How should PA66, PA612 and PA46 be chosen for the marine industry?

Different polyamide materials suit different application environments:

  • PA66: Good mechanical strength and all-round performance; suitable for general industrial wiring.

  • PA612: Lower moisture absorption and good dimensional stability; suitable for ships, coastal equipment, and high-humidity and salt-spray environments.

  • PA46: Excellent heat resistance and high-temperature mechanical strength; suitable for engine rooms, motors, and high-temperature equipment.

Choosing the right material for the environment in which the equipment operates helps improve reliability and extend service life.

Why are PA612 cable ties recommended for high-humidity and salt-spray environments?
PA612 is a long-chain polyamide. Compared with PA66 and PA46, it offers lower water absorption, better dimensional stability, chemical resistance and low-temperature toughness, so its performance is less likely to change due to moisture absorption. On ships, marine equipment, coastal facilities and outdoor high-humidity environments, PA612 provides more stable cable bundle retention and is one of the materials commonly chosen for high-humidity and salt-spray environments.
